Italy: Foreign minister supports UNESCO focus

Rome 22 Nov.(AKI) - Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini on Monday expressed support on Monday for the United Nation's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO's focus on 'culture and development' at a meeting with UNESCO director Irina Bokova.

The meeting came in the wake of a recent disaster in a UNESCO world heritage site, Pompeii, when the 2,000 year old 'House of Gladiators' was reduced to rubble earlier this month.

Italy gives the greatest voluntary contribution to UNESCO, a Foreign Ministry press release underlined, while it boasts 44, or 5 percent of all world heritage sites, more than any other country.

The 'House of the Gladiators' is considered one of the most archaeologically important houses in Pompeii.

The collapse of the celebrated structure shocked the world and prompted calls for Italian culture minister Sandro Bondi's resignation.
