Iran: Teenager hanged, eight more on death row

Tehran, 27 Feb.(AKI) - Iran teenager Javad Shojai was hanged on Tuesday in Tehran's Evin Prison, Tehran dailies reported on Wednesday. Shojai was only 16 when he committed the murder for which he was executed.

Eight more minors are currently on death row, awaiting their 18th birthday before they are executed. Five of the teenagers, Ahmad Mortazavian, Reza Hejazi, Iman Hashemi, Reza Bikasan and Hamid Bikasan, are detained in Isfahan prison in central Iran.

The remaining three teenagers on death row, Benjamin Rasouli, Ali Mihan Torabi and Behnoud Shojai are being held in Gohardasht prison, on the outskirts of Tehran.

Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world. Well over 40 people have been executed in Iran since the beginning of 2008.

At least 298 people were executed in 2007, almost twice as many as in 2006. Methods of execution include hanging and stoning.
