Pakistan: Top university official killed in southwest

Balochistan, 22 April (AKI) - Gunmen aboard a motorbike on Tuesday shot dead the pro-vice Chancellor of Baluchistan University, Safdar Hussain Kiyani, in southwestern Pakistan.

The Baloch Liberation Army, a shadowy militant separatist organisation has claimed responsibility for Kiyani's slaying.

He was killed as he was walking near his home in Quetta, the capital of restive Baluchistan province (photo).

Kiyani, who is related to the current head of the army, General Ashfaq Kiyani, died instantly. His body was due to be taken to his native city of Jhelum in Punjab for burial.

“The character of the separatists in Baluchistan is foreign rather than local, hence the murder is clearly aimed at destabilising the country,” said a security official.

The offical spoke on condition of anonymity as his office does not allow him to make public statements.

The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party has announced it will hold a cross-party conference to forge a political solution for Baluchistan.

The government has announced it will withdraw its case against the Baluchi nationalist leader Akhtar Mengal.

Baluchistan University was expected to be closed on Wednesday to mark Kyani's killing.  The Punjab University teachers' association also announced a day of mourning.
