Iran: Ahmadinejad to auction car for charity

Tehran, 22 Nov. (AKI) - Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has put his car on the auction block to lend a hand for a charity housing project known as the Mehr Housing Plan, according to state-run media, that said he was donating a Peugot.

"The car is put up for international auction, and the [starting] price will be announced soon," Iranian minister of welfare Sadeq Mahsouli was quoted as saying on the Press TV website.

Money generated from the sale will help Iran's poor purchase a house, according to Mahsouli.

Under the Mehr Housing Plan, real estate developers offer free lands in return for building cheap residential units for first-time buyers on 99-year lease contracts.

The global economic crisis has caused Iran to cut welfare spending by 100 billion dollars.
