Kuwait: Journalist sentenced to 1 year for article critical of premier

Kuwait City, 22 Nov. (AKI) - A journalist in Kuwait on Monday was sentenced to one year in prison for writing an article considered very critical of prime minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

Mohammad Abdulqader al-Jassem posted an article on his website accusing Iranian intelligence of interfering in Kuwaiti affairs via a businessman with close ties to the prime minister.

The businessman was not named and was referred to as "M", who is a Kuwaiti citizen of Iranian origin.

Jassem has denied accusing Sabah of working with Iranian intelligence.

The journalist has been accused of slander and other infractions numerous times.

The same lower court in April sentenced him to six months behind bars for slandering the prime minister at a demonstration. The sentence was overturned on appeal.
