Iraq: Vice-president condemns church attacks

Baghdad, 7 Jan. (AKI) - Iraqi vice-president Tariq al-Hashimi has condemned the devastating weekend attacks against churches and monasteries in Baghdad and Mosul.

In a statement released by his press office on Monday, Hashimi expressed his "closeness to Christians", whom he called "brothers" in the face of this "attack that changed their joy to sadness and anxiety".

Hashimi said that "the Iraqis have a lot more to do to free themselves from the phenomenon of violence and terrorism, despite indices of relative improvement to a level of security".

The vice-premier then appealed to the Iraqi president Jalal Talabani to use "care and prudence to cure Iraq from this phenomenon".

Six churches and monasteries were the target of bombings at the weekend to mark the celebration of the Orthodox Christmas. The attacks took place in Baghdad and in Mosul, 450 kilometres north of the capital, on Sunday.
