West Bank: Jihadi leader killed in Israeli raid

Jenin, 16 Jan. (AKI) - Walid Obeidi, leader of the military wing of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, has been killed by Israeli troops in a raid in the West Bank.

Media reports said Obeidi was shot during an exchange of fire that took place before dawn in the village of Qabatiya, near the northern town of Jenin, on Wednesday.

The al-Quds Brigades, military wing of the organisation, confirmed the death. Two of his bodyguards were also reported to have been injured in the confrontation.

Obeidi's death comes a day after Israel killed 20 Palestinians and injured 45 others in an attack in the Gaza Strip in one of the deadliest days in recent months. A general strike was being held in Gaza on Wednesday to honor the victims.

Islamic Jihad is a small radical group linked to rocket attacks aimed at Israel from Gaza in the past two years.
