Algeria: Young al-Qaeda recruits arrested




Algiers, 5 May(AKI) - The Algerian army on Monday arrested a group of 15 young people suspected to have been on their way to join a local al-Qaeda cell.

The youths were stopped in the thickly wooded area of Awlad Yaish in the province of Blida, 45 kilometres from Algiers, police told the Kuwaiti news agency Kuna.

Three al-Qaeda militants were also arrested in the Blida region, while in the Boumerdes area another group of al-Qaeda militants was arrested.

Two weeks ago, Algerian police arrested two suspected members of al-Qaeda in the Shashar district.

The Algerian military carries out daily surveillance of the forests and mountainous areas of the country in search of militants.
