Pakistan: Over 580 militants killed in S. Waziristan, says military

Islamabad, 10 Dec. (AKI/DAWN) - Pakistan's security forces have so far killed 589 militants and arrested 45 others during the ongoing operation in South Waziristan. Military spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas told Pakistani daily Dawn that 79 security personnel lost their lives and 240 were injured since the offensive began in mid-October.

North and South Waziristan are considered a major sanctuary for Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.

Abbas said that security forces had seized large quantities of arms and ammunition from hideouts of fleeing insurgents. These included anti-aircraft machine-guns, machine-guns, heavy machine-guns, as well as hundreds of rifles of various types.

The army also found artillery guns, one Russian-made missile launcher, pistols as well as truckloads of ammunition.

According to the public relations branch of the military, or ISPR, a number of improvised explosive devices or IEDs were destroyed during the operation in Aka Khel Pungai near Ahmedwam and Abdullah Noor Kaskai near Kotkai in Jandola sector on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Security forces also arrested five suspects at Miachan Baba and Shaka in Shakai sector. In Razmak sector, 25 compounds were cleared in Tara Tiza Alghad and Mairobi Raghzai areas, a huge cache of arms and ammunition was seized.
