El-Arish, 31 January (AKI) - The Al-Qaeda inspired jihadist group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed Monday's attack on a gas pipeline in Egypt's restive Sinai peninsula.

In a statement posted to jihadist websites, the Sinai-based group said it carried out the attack on the pipeline south of the flashpoint town of El-Arish to "strike at the Egyptian economy and regime".

The authenticity of the statement has not been verified.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for most of the spate of deadly militant attacks across the country since the army ousted Egypt's elected Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July last year.

The group claimed Tuesday's assassination in Giza of an aide to Egypt's interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim and a missile attack earlier this month that downed a military helicopter in the peninsula, killing all five crew members.
