Salerno, 20 May (AKI) - Police in the southern city of Salerno arrested 10 people on Friday in an operation to break up an alleged Naples mafia extortion gang. The suspects face charges of extortion and abetting the mafia.

Investigators allege the suspects are associates of the Naples mafia or the Camorra's Fezza-D'Auria clan and exorted money from local businesses in the Salerno area.

The arrests followed an investigation by paramilitary police in the Campania towns of Pagani and Nocera Inferiore, north of Salerno.

The Camorra is one of Italy's most powerful mafia syndicates based in and around the southern city of Naples.

The 2006 book 'Gomorrah ' by Italian writer Roberto Saviano and the 2008 movie by the same name is an expose of the powerful and extremely violent criminal organisation.

Italy's interior minister Roberto Maroni in early May said the net was closing in on the Camorra's fugitive 'boss of bosses' Michele Zagaria, who has been on the run for over 15 years.

Police on 2 May arrested Mario Caterino, said to be the Camorra's second-in-command, in the Camorra stronghold of Casal dei Principi near Naples after six years on the run
