"Today there is no head of the Sicilian mafia," he told Rai state radio on Wednesday. "They top leadership is all in jail."
The Sicilian mafia, otherwise known as the Cosa Nostra, is one of the three biggest Italian organised crime syndicates. The Camorra from the Naples area, and the 'Ndrangheta from the southern Calabria region, are the other two top crime groups.
The fugitive head of the Sicilian mafia, Matteo Messina Denaro, has been on the run since 1993. He is believed to have become its leader after longtime fugitive 'boss of bosses' Bernardo Provenzano was captured in 2006.
